When Pink is Acceptable

Besides supporting breast cancer research and awareness, as TheSassyOne pointed out, pink does have an appropriate role in the world of sports.  It’s just not on jerseys, jackets, etc.

But it can be done well.  Take, for example, the University of Iowa.  Very rarely do I have anything complementary to say about the Hawkeyes, but they have figured out how to do pink right.  The visitors locker room in Carver-Hawkeye Arena is painted pink, a “non-aggressive” color meant to ”calm” visiting teams.  Students picked up on this and many choose to wear pink to carry that theme into the stadium.  I appreciate this ironic team support, as well as the creativity of college students.

But note why pink was chosen — to mock, not support.  True fans wear team colors.  I happen to like pink, and it is a better color for me than, say, orange.  However, when supporting my Illini, I choose to wear Illini Orange.  It’s a loud, obnoxious, intimidating color that clearly states my loyalty.  And really, how could you cheer for the Bears in a pink Urlacher jersey?  It just doesn’t work.
