We’re not saying we don’t support Breast Cancer Awareness…

I know we are not the first girls to be put off by the blatant steryotyping that inspired merchandising exectutives to roll out pink as a surefire way to get females to buy team paraphanilia.  Articles have been written about it, blogs have commented on it, true sports fans have rebelled against it, but still women everywhere are wearing pink at the ballpark.  I would like to think they are not wearing pink because they are turned off by the ugliness of their team’s colors (although surely the White Sox and Astros fans of the early 80’s must have been hard pressed to lay down any money on the hideous rainbow colors their players were wearing.  In fact, I am convinced that there are more White Sox fans now than ever before, because they now wear jerseys that are cool and not because they won the World Series).  I believe women are wearing pink jerseys because they are finally producing sports wear that actually fits a woman’s body.  I am not, contray to the thought process of just about every T-shirt designer, or by the person doing the T-shirt ordering, a men’s size large.  I am not a part of a one-size fits all world.  I am not a child’s size medium either, but that is close enough I guess.  Still it seams like these steryotyping mechandising execs are right in thinking that many women have no concern for wearing their team’s colors, no concern for supporting a particular player, but simply a desire to look hot while on a date at the ballpark.  We however, are not a part of that school of thought.  WE actually know about sports and would like to show our support IN team colors in a shirt that may inadvertantly make us look hot.  We don’t fit the steryotype for female sports fans and we are out to prove it.  However, we do occasionally like a player for his looks. 

I have to go beyond just being anti-pink and say that I am also an Anti-Mark Prior Jersey Girl.  I thought I was disgusted in general by all the fans at Wrigley Field who are not informed as to who is actually on the field and wear the jersey’s of long by-gone players, but then my favorite player was traded.  I have since decided that it is perfectly legitimate to wear the sports jersey of your favorite player, even if he was branded a club house cancer and shipped off, or sent down to triple-A, or he was never a part of your team anyway but is about to become the fifth winningest left-hander in MLB history.  However, it is not okay to wear Mark Prior Jerseys.  That’s like wearing a button that says, “Hi. I’m on the Bandwaggon.”  Its like admitting that the last time you paid any attention to the Cubs was in 2003, that you avoided all the pain of 2006, and decided to jump back on in 2007 and failed to notice that Mark Prior sucks.  However, it is still fully acceptible to have a tiny-Mark-Prior-in-a-snow-globe. 

We are looking forward to writing down our many thoughts, opinions, occasional rants, total disgust with the misinformed media, total devotion to all Chicago sports and our love for college teams.
